J. Robert Bruya was a beloved, generous and eccentric professor who taught in the Department of Art at Slippery Rock University for more than thirty years. An award winning metal smith, he was also known to many as the “Road Kill King of Western Pennsylvania,” for using bones, feathers and found objects in his work and encouraging students to learn and design from nature. He engaged students deeply in the artistic process and cared for their development as artists and as people.
The J. Robert Bruya scholarship fund was established in 2010 with generous contributions from people like you. A $900 award will be given annually to promising Art students who are selected competitively by a scholarship committee. The first award was made in 2011 to Michelle Miller, a BFA student with a teacher certification major.
J. Robert always jokingly insisted, “I don’t want a tombstone. I want to be remembered in the Art Department at Slippery Rock.” If you knew J. Robert, you know that he is hard to forget! Please help us in reaching our goal of fully endowing this scholarship, so that Bob will be remembered, and can continue to help students, in the SRU Art Department through the years to come.

Hi Sara and family!
Great work on the website. I really appreciate your father’s artist statement. He must have opened many, many minds while at SRU. Thank goodness you are preserving his amazing legacy.
Take care and hope to see you on your next visit to campus!
Best wishes,
Amy Bersett

Sara, So good to hear you. Your father was such a wonderful teacher and friend. I was one of the many returning, non-traditional students who really appreciated his many faceted life style! The pewter work shops at chinkateaque were the best classes and memories. Dee Granger, Ocean City, MD
Hi Dee, Nice to hear from you. Of course I remember you! I miss those summers at the beach! Hope you’re well. I’m in Boston, Kristen is in Toronto. Please stay in touch! Sara
Yes, those were wonderful days at the beach and working with pewter. You’ll remember Neva Hantover, she is living in Providence, RI, in a retirement home she is 90 yrs now. We were both sad to hear of Bob’s passing.
We considered Bob our family!
